Pressure Vessel Fabrication

HITEC Welding manufactures and supplies pressure vessels of all shapes, sizes, thicknesses and materials.

The HITEC Welding workshop facility has 15T over-head lifting capacity and 8 metre high by 12 metre wide roller doors allowing for very large pressure vessels to be fabricated and handled.

HITEC Welding also provides maintenance and repair services for pressure equipment. This includes hard-facing surfaces such as exchanger shells and flange faces.

Our process for the design, engineering and fabrication of pressure vessels is maintained and monitored by HITEC Welding’s quality management system certified to ISO 9001:2015.

All non-destructive testing (NDT) is completed on location in accordance with the associated project specifications and respective standards.

All associated weld procedures, quality and traceability records, material certificates, associated drawings are compiled in the HITEC Welding manufactures data report.

What are pressure vessels?

Pressure vessels are specialised containers designed to store or process fluids or gases at pressures vastly different from the ambient pressure. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes and designs, but are most often a cylinder, cone or sphere.

Common applications for pressure vessels include petrochemical processing, hydraulic fracturing, and coal seam gas extraction. They can also be used as tube heat exchangers, boilers or reactors across a wide range of industries.

Pressure vessels must be designed and constructed to withstand the extremely high internal and external pressures they will experience. They also need to be properly tested and certified before they can be put into service. Ensuring that your pressure vessel meets all of the necessary safety standards is critical for your operations.

How are pressure vessels manufactured?

Pressure vessel design and engineering is a complex process. The first step is to create a design which will be used to determine the size and shape of the vessel, as well as the materials that will be used. Once the design is complete, the next step is to cut the steel plates that will be used in the vessel’s construction.

The type of steel used will depend on the specific application for the pressure vessel. Stainless steel and carbon steel are preferred as they are known for their high tensile strength and corrosion resistance. These materials are capable of providing high performance in terms of safety and protection in harsh environments. After the steel plates are cut, they must be forged and rolled into the desired shape. The plates are then fitted and welded together.

Once the vessel is fabricated, it must go through a rigorous testing process to ensure it is free of any defects. This helps to identify any potential problems with the vessel before it is put into service and ensures that it complies with project specifications and respective standards. After this inspection is complete, the pressure vessel can be painted or coated with a protective layer to help extend its lifespan.

How does pressure vessel registration work?

Certain types of pressure equipment must be registered with the relevant statutory body in your state or territory. Pressure vessels used in the oil and gas industry fall under these specific hazards levels which require registration. They are exposed to extremely harsh operating conditions with the potential for catastrophic failures.

Australia adheres to the safety standard set by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) for pressure vessels to validate their safety, increase their longevity and functional value. Each vessel goes through a rigorous design and testing process to ensure it performs as expected. Registration is an important measure that helps protect people and property from the dangers of pressurised equipment.
